Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Honored for Work with Minority Candidates
Wallena Gould, a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) at South Jersey Healthcare System in Vineland, NJ, was honored on October 26 by Cherokee Uniforms with one of its six annual awards for health care professionals nationwide, Press of Atlantic City reported.

Gould won the top national award for advanced practice nurses for her work helping minorities become nurse anesthetists. She began by mentoring fellow students at La Salle University. Last year, she launched the non-profit Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program to assist underprivileged minority students, the awards panel said.

Gould has mentored 2,000 nurse anesthetist candidates, resulting in about 80 minority registered nurses joining the profession since 2003, the report said. According to some estimates, African-Americans and Hispanics each make up less than 2% of all CRNAs. As a result, nursing schools and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists are working to boost diversity in the profession.
