Leadership

Surviving the Entrepreneurial Bug

Businesses in the current economic climate are disappearing left and right due to a variety of factors in all industries and sectors throughout the country. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a “safe” market, regardless of the business you are in or where you are located. For those entrepreneurs launching new businesses, the risks are even greater as they are forced to compete with established businesses, businesses that have not only survived in these difficult economic times, but already have a customer base and revenue. However, while the challenges are great, for those that are successful the rewards can be extremely significant.

How Can You Beat the Odds?

To be a successful start-up in today’s world requires more than having a product or service that no one else offers. With the advent of the Internet, many businesses find themselves competing, not only with local and national organizations, but also with global ones able to offer the same services at significant price reductions.

If you want to be that new business that beats the odds, it is necessary to offer not only more than your competition, but also to offer that service in a cost effective and efficient manner. Another key requirement for any new business wishing to challenge a leader in an established market is service.

Businesses that provide a higher level of service to their customers have been shown to be significantly more successful than their peers. In fact, in many markets, the only difference among businesses is the level of service on offer as the prices in their markets are very similar. Perhaps unsurprisingly, those businesses offering the more pre- and post- sales service to their customers are significantly more successful in the longer term.

Another key requirement for any business hoping to make it in the early stages is having a clear vision with defined goals and objectives. The person responsible for determining the vision of the business is the leader.

Leadership

There are many definitions of leadership, but the key common factor in all of them is a leader is a person who influences a group of people, a company or an organization, and guides them towards a specific goal or accomplishment. For a new business trying to establish itself, a clearly defined management structure with a passionate leader is absolutely essential.

This person needs to not only believe in the product or service that they are selling; they need to know why they are that much better at it than anyone else. A leader is a company’s advocate at all times and that passion needs to be evident not only externally but, perhaps even more importantly, to their own internal staff and partners.

Being that inspirational leader is more than just knowing your company’s products. A true leader needs to always look at ways to improve the quality of the people and staff within their organization.

Being that Leader

A company’s most important resources are always the people in it. It is only through a truly vocal, visible and passionate leader (especially in the early stages) that a company is able to establish itself. While this keeps the employees motivated and committed, it does not always ensure that the customers are being served to the highest level.

A leader needs to know what skills are needed within their teams to further advance their capabilities, not only from a product and efficiency perspective, but also from the point of view of further advancement. By ensuring that internal resources, its employees, are coached and trained effectively, the leader improves their ability to service the customer. Better trained resources mean that customer problems are resolved faster, products are built better and services are provided more efficiently. Realizing that training is not just an expense, but an investment in the company’s future, is a leader’s gift.

Businesses with MWBE Partners

The key skill needed for corporate businesses dealing with MWBE businesses is the knowledge of industry best practices and expectations. Businesses that can provide this information to their MWBE partners will see an improved level of service from their partners.

If corporate customers are able to provide their MWBE partners with access to their own internal resources and tools as well, this improved service will also be accompanied by an increased level of efficiency in their day to day dealings.
